2.5-Day High-Fire Experimental Soda Surfaces Workshop

I’m excited to invite ceramicists to my home studio in Provo Utah, for an engaging and hands-on soda firing experience. This 2.5-day workshop offers a chance to dive into the high-fire soda process, from glazing and wadding to firing and unloading the kiln.

Cone 10 Clay is required!

COMMERCIAL CLAY WILL NOT PROVIDE THE SURFACES I ACHIEVE IN MY WORK!

What to Expect:
- Limited spots ensure every participant has multiple pieces in the firing.  (1.25cu feet each)
- Bring 5-15 bisqued pots (5"x5" or smaller recommended) that can fire to cone 10+.
- Studio glazes and slips will be provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own materials.
- Workshop fees covers 5lb of clay, propane, glazes, slips, kiln maintenance, and other necessary materials.

Who Can Attend:
- Open to ceramicists aged 18 and older with clay experience.

- Ideal for those looking to expand their knowledge of high-fire and atmospheric techniques.

Workshop Schedule:

Day 1: (Estimated 2-3hrs)
- Afternoon: Presentation on my process
- Evening: Begin loading the kiln / wadding pots

Day 2:  (Estimated 8-9hrs)
- Early morning: Start firing the kiln at 7am Ideally
- Observe and learn about the firing process throughout the day
- Add soda mixture as the kiln reaches its peak temperature (approximately 5-8 hour firing)

Day 3: (Estimated 2-3hrs)
- Early morning: Check temperature and unload kiln
- Mid-morning: Discuss the results and sand/finish pots

**Additional Information:**

- Just a WARNING that high iron clay and commercial clay will NOT provide the surface I achieve in my work and tend to look traditionally fired and less exciting. (We will talk about why that is during the workshop)

- I have created a presentation that dives deep into my process and the research I am pursuing. Feel free to bring a pen and paper so you are able to take notes.

- If you join the workshop I would love for you to reach out to me and introduce yourself so I can share any additional info and answer any questions you have.

- Participants traveling from out of town can arrive midday on the first day, and affordable lodging options are available nearby.

- The workshop wraps up after unloading and cleanup on the final day.

- Clay available: 5lb of clay is included in the workshop fee feel free to reach out so you can pick this up before the workshop. For participants who need additional cone 10 clay, I can provide it at $2 per pound 10lb max. However, I am not a clay distributor so this is limited and only for those attending the workshop. I can also provide a list of materials I use and where I source them. COMMERCIAL CLAY WILL NOT PROVIDE THE SURFACES I ACHIEVE IN MY WORK!

 - All bookings are final. Spots are limited, and last-minute cancellations prevent others from having the opportunity to join.

- If you are not available to stay the whole duration of the firing that is totally okay the process take anywhere form 8-12 hours depending on how we decide to fire the kiln. I tend to make adjustment to the kiln each hour so you are welcome to come and go if you need. :)
